Abstinence Education

One of the outreach programs of The Women's Clinic of Kansas City is the Abstinence Education Program. The curriculum being presented is entitled, "Choosing the Best", a leading abstinence and relationship education program since 1993. The author, Bruce Cook, has authored over 20 educational training programs and is a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Business and Georgia Institute of Technology.

The curriculum is divided into two age-appropriate programs. The middle school curriculum, "Choosing the Best Path" attempts to guide the early adolescent toward healthy choices by equipping him or her with appropriate information including such topics as character development, making right choices, learning to say no and planning for the future, just to name a few. The high school curriculum is a bit more in-depth, and deals with issues facing the middle and late adolescent. Our goal at The Women's Clinic of Kansas City is to build on what the teens have learned at home and at school about sexual behavior, and equip them to make informed healthy choices. We focus on the one true healthy choice - abstinence until marriage.

We realize we can increase our effectiveness in decreasing the number of teen pregnancies by educating teens and parents. Even though we have applied for our first grant to teach abstinence throughout Jackson County, we are beginning our classes now.

The Women's Clinic of Kansas City is available to bring this curriculum to a variety of settings, youth groups, school groups, and after-school programs. Interested parties should contact Debra Neel at 816-836-9000.
